Characters

Mary

A nurse at Carrboro, she is immediately attracted to Vincent. Vincent tricks her into solving the Box, and she is tortured by Hunger. Before being taken to Hell, Hunger tells her to throw the Box. In Hell, she is remade into a Cenobite pet.

Mary's Boyfriend

Frustrated that Mary is always thinking of her job. Mary imagines that he is Vincent while they have sex.

Hunger

Cenobite summoned by the Carrboro Lament Configuration. He is extremely thin, with a large mouth. He struck a deal with Vincent: in exchange for victims, he would eventually make Vincent into a Cenobite. Before taking Mary to Hell, he tells her to throw the Box. After accidentally solving the puzzle of the Carrboro Center while searching for the Box, Hunger takes Vincent to Hell as well.

Hunger Troop 1

Cenobite summoned by the Carrboro Lament Configuration. He has yellow eyes, a mouth full of sharp fangs and pointed ears. It accompanied Hunger to take Mary and Vincent to Hell.

Hunger Troop 2

Cenobite summoned by the Carrboro Lament Configuration. The flesh of its face is so mutilated, it resembles a walnut shell eating its neck. It accompanied Hunger to take Mary and Vincent to Hell.

Hunger Troop 3

Cenobite summoned by the Carrboro Lament Configuration. It possess a very tall forehead crisscrossed with veins. It's mouth and nose are either missing or obscured by its collar. Instead of hands, it has long needles. It accompanied Hunger to take Mary and Vincent to Hell.

Vincent

A patient at Carrboro for a little more than a year. He contracted leprosy while studying American Indian culture as a student. Rather than seek treatment, he sought the Lament Configuration. He transferred to Carrboro after learning that LeMarchand had worked there. He discovered a Carrboro Lament Configuration at Carrboro, but by that time his hands were too damaged to solve it. He talks people into solving the Box, offering them to Hunger in the hope that they will turn him into a Cenobite. After tricking Mary into solving the Box, Hunger told her to throw the Box away. Vincent wandered the halls of Carrboro, searching for it. His wandering accidentally solved the puzzle of the Carrboro Center itself. He was taken to Hell by Hunger and his troops.

Dr. Watkins

Mary's boss at Carrboro. He warns Mary that she's spending too much time with Vincent and not enough time with the other patients.

Locations

Carrboro Hansen's Disease Center

The "only leper colony in the lower 48." Dr. Watkins and Mary work there, and Vincent is a patient there. The center was designed by architect LeMarchand. By negotiating its passages in a specific way, it opens a door to Hell.

Timeline

1989	Vincent is transferred to Carrboro and discovers the Carrboro Lament Configuration.
1990	Mary solves the Carrboro Lament Configuration and is taken to Hell. Vincent solves the Carrboro Hansen's Disease Center puzzle and is taken to Hell.
