The Experiment
by Amy Cummins

In Merchant laboratory, in the outskirts of Amsterdam, Professor Lisle is continuing his experiments with Angel the chimpanzee. He believes he can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that chimpanzees, and perhaps the other great apes, know the difference between right and wrong, good and evil.
It is 2am and the lab is virtually deserted. Professor Lisle has Angel strapped face down on the cold steel table. He undoes his flies and penetrates the petrified animal. Her scream wrings out. It is much more high pitched than that of a woman or child, but it is just as harrowing. The shriek of a creature who is scared, and in pain, and that knows that something wrong is being done to it.
Beside them on another table, glistening in the moonlight streaming through the window, is an ornate black and bronze cube. When Lisle is finished, he straightens himself up, and unties Angel. He goes over to the decorative box and motions for Angel to follow.
" Come here, Angel. Look, I have a present for you."
She moves cautiously closer, as he lifts the box and offers it to her, with a cold, fixed grin on his face.
" Take it. See if you can open it."
Angel reaches out and took it. She clutches it in both hands to her chest and scurries over to her cage. Her safe place, because it was too small for Lisle to enter. She rolls it around between her hands, looking at it intently, not quite sure what to do with it.
Lisle goes to his desk, and begins to write up some more notes in his diary.
"Friday 29th November 1952
Angel still must be restrained when being penetrated, and still screams out when I am doing so. At precisely 2.15am I gave her the Lament Configuration. She seems greatly interested in it, and if she succeeds in opening it, and revealing it's secrets, it will prove…….. "
He stops writing as an unnatural light fills the room. He hears footsteps behind him, and turns. There before him stands a creature that was once a man. The being is clad all in black leather, with chains and instruments of torture hanging from it's waist. But it was it's face that causes Lisle the most horror. For it's eyes and mouth had metal clamps around them, and a metal band was fitted tightly around the top of it's head. It does not speak, does not even seem to notice Lisle, it goes straight to Angel's cage.
She approaches the creature, it extends a hand to her and she takes it. The seems to be an unspoken bond between them, or a telepathic link. Angel goes with the creature, towards the eerie light, and they are gone. Lisle is left alone, unable to move or think, completely in shock.
"Do not fear, Angel. I am Surgeon, I shall be your teacher and protector. You shall live and learn here in Leviathan's domain. You shall become like me, like us. Be taught our ways, serve our master. And, you shall live forever."
After telling Angel this, Surgeon begins her transformation. A wire is embedded in the flesh around the top of her head, stitched through her ears and then made to pull the corners of her mouth wide apart. More wires are attached to the top and bottom of her mouth on both sides to pull her mouth into a permanent grin. She is then clad in a leather frock, with chains and her own devilish tools around her waist.
Back in his lab, Lisle has acquired another young female chimp. But before he can begin his same regime of abuse, that light again fills the room. This time it is accompanied by a demonic horn, the clanking of chains, and the distant sound of tortured screams. Out of the light appear Surgeon and Angel.
Angel, now able to walk permanently on her hind legs, approaches Lisle and the frightened chimp, Pippa. She reaches her hand out to Pippa, who immediately calms down and takes Angel's hand. Angel then leads Pippa into the light, to the Labyrinth, leaving Surgeon with Lisle. Surgeon advances on Lisle, raising one of his tools as he approaches. Lisle tries to scream but no noise escapes as he backs into a corner
"Do not fear, Lisle. I am Surgeon, I shall be your teacher and executioner."
