Nightmares

In the darkness of her bedroom Faith opened the sliding glass doors. She listened to ocean tides gently lapping upon the sandy coast. It was 3:00 in the morning, she was restless and couldn't sleep. Faith kept thinking about her father's last words. Faith's father had said: "Promise me, promise me you won't..." he couldn't finish. He died before he could get his message clear.

Faith padded over to the mirror. She was tall and had short, black hair with traces of grey here and there. She was in her mid 30's. Faith had aquamarine-green eyes, tan smooth, skin, and maroon lips. She glanced at the glass doors. A light breeze was lingering through the doors. The white curtains flowed in motion with the wind. Faith loped back to her bed, pulled her white comforter up to her chin, and fell asleep to the sound of the crashing waves.

Early the next day, Faith sat up in bed and blinked a few times.

"Well, I overslept," she said to her graceful, lithe Greyhound. She lifted her slim, brindle muzzle and gave Faith a doggy grin. Faith tossed the comforter from the bed. She went to the kitchen and had breakfast while feeding her dog. Faith returned to her bedroom and closed her door. She made the bed and picked up her dirty clothes. When Faith looked up, she realized that she had clumsily left the sliding doors open. As she tried to close them, they seemed to have gotten stuck on something. Faith bent over and picked up her small, golden puzzle box. It was the only thing her father had left her.

"How did you get down there?" she pondered while grasping her puzzle box. She placed it upon the shelf above her bed.

All Faith did that day was run errands and take Miep, her dog, for walks. That night, Faith stayed wide awake; she was begining to think she was nocturnal. The wierdest to her was what she dreamed of. A man appeared to her in dreams. He had a grotesque looking face: it had a grid carved in it with nails pounded into the intersections of his grid. He wore black leather with slashes in his stomach that showed dried, brown blood. His voice was deep and demonic, yet so soothing. Faith felt relaxed but equally terrified when she saw him. A lady also visited her in her subconcious. All Faith knew was that the lady's name was Angelique. The strangest thing was that both spoke of the same things yet never appeared together. She always counted on one of them to be there. It was like clockwork.

They spoke of her box. Faith's box. They wanted her to solve the puzzle. Whenever she questioned them they vanished. Eventually Faith gave up on that question. They had been visiting for a grand total of 3 years. Faith never understood why they did, but always welcomed them. As Faith sat in bed contemplating and listening to the lapping of the waves, she drifted off into a half-sleep/half-awake state.

The man appeared to her. "What is your name?" she feebly demanded.

"Pinhead," he replied. "Faith, I need your help."

"How?" Faith asked.

"Open the box. Set me free," Pinhead demanded.

"Alright, but wait... I saw what happened to my dad. Will that happen to me?" Faith interrogated.

"No, I won't let it," Pinhead smiled.

"Okay -- when I wake up. At least let me have one peaceful night of rest," she retorted. Pinhead left and for the first night in three years Faith slept soundly and silently.

The next day she was full of energy and had gotten everything finished by four. Around 11pm she went in her room and picked up the box. She went out to the beach and sat in the sand. As Faith fingered the box, her father's last words popped in her head. Faith shrugged them off as the box clicked. She had seen it happen before, but every time it fascinated her. As the puzzle finished, the beach quieted down. Faith looked up to see both Pinhead and Angelique.

"Hello, Faith," Angelique waved.

"Faith, thank you," Pinhead greeted her.

"No, thank you Pinhead for two things. Number one: a peacful night of sleep. Number two: for not letting me get torn apart by chains, as you promised," Faith said.

"I always keep my word, Faith," Pinhead answered.

"You can count on it," Angelique retorted sarcastically. Faith looked puzzled at Angelique. She caught her eye and smiled. "Just a simple joke," Angelique laughed. Pinhead stood looking at the waves crashing on the rocks.

"What is it you came for?" Faith questioned.

"Your box," Angelique blankly replied.

"My box?" Faith stammered.

"And people," Angelique answered. Faith's father's last words drifted back into her thoughts. Suddenly, Faith realized what he meant, and it scared her to death. She grabbed the box and got up. Pinhead looked at her.

"Sorry, but I made one hell of a bad mistake," Faith yelled. She took off running down the beach while trying to solve the box.

"Faith, I don't think so," Pinhead hissed. Two giant Chatterer Beasts, which ran much faster than her, brought her back.

"Faith, give it to us," Angelique ordered. Pinhead stood very close to her, and she caught a glimpse of one of his knives.

Faith freed the knife and said: "Die, demon, die!" It surprised Angelique to the fullest. Faith tried to spear Pinhead with his own knife.

"Stop it, Faith," Pinhead violently ordered. Pinhead grabbed Faith and forced the knife out of her hand. Faith didn't give up and she lunged for the knife a second time, but Pinhead withheld it.

"Miep! Come here girl!" Faith screamed. There was a sound of shattering glass and Miep galloped loyally toward her master, teeth bared as she saw the Chatterer Beasts. All three clashed violently, but Miep was outnumbered, as was Faith. Faith tore herself from Pinhead's hold and tackled a Chatterer Beast, relieving Miep somewhat.

"Ah, Faith, you cannot defeat my Chatterer Beasts, even with your dog's help," Pinhead told her. Suddenly, there was a hellish scream as Miep tore a Chatterer Beast's throat open. Blood splattered everywhere as it sank to the ground. Miep sprang to the other one. Her silky coat was torn and and bleeding.

"NOOO!" Pinhead screamed. "Call off your dog!" Pinhead snarled.

"Miep! Stop it! Come, Miep!" Faith sang as she ran down the beach. Miep galloped after. Faith glanced over her shoulder, she could see Pinhead kneeling by one of the Chatterer Beasts, gently stroking it.

"Arf, arf," Miep happily barked.

"NOO!" Faith screamed, as chains wrapped around her arms and jerked her back. Miep, not knowing what to do, followed her, growling and snarling at Pinhead.

"Oh, Faith, don't you know you can't beat us?" Pinhead grinned. Quickly Miep freed Faith from her restraints. Angelique, angry at the dog, hit Miep and knocked her out.

"Bitch!" Faith bellowed. Angelique just smiled. Angelique angered Faith so much that she solved the whole puzzle in a matter of seconds. "There, I hope you die!" Faith smirked. Angelique smiled again.

"You insolent fool!" Pinhead bellowed. "I will make you suffer like no one else has!" Faith tried to run but it was of no use. Pinhead grabbed her and whirled her around. Angelique stepped up from behind and steadied Faith.

"Hold still, human!" Angelique ordered. Finally Faith quieted down.

"Now, time for your suffering." Pinhead smirked. "I regret to tell you, you won't enjoy this as much as I will." Pinhead stood in front of Faith. She watched in horror as Pinhead pulled two long, metal nails from his grid.

"What are you doing?" Faith whimpered.

"Oh, you'll see or maybe you won't," he replied. Slowly he inserted the nails into Faith's eyes.

"Aaaaah!!!!!!!" Faith wailed. As soon as Pinhead finished inserting the nails into her eyes, he let out a scream and vanished. ith had wondered when the box would work.

"Pinhead never could stay long," Angelique replied, while walking toward Faith, intent on finishing her off. Suddenly, Miep sprang out of nowhere and ripped her throat wide open. Just after that, Angelique vanished. Miep dragged herself over to her fallen master and died. Faith's last words were: "I'm sorry, Daddy." Then she disappeared into Hell and died.

The End.
